(More customer reviews)I was finally able to locate a steel that will not damage the blades of my kitchen knives. And it's a quality item to boot! The steel rod is securely attached to the molded plastic handle. It has a nice weight to it; it should last a long time. The stainless steel is completely smooth. There are no ribs, diamond dust, ect. that will take metal off your knife. I purchased this to keep my brand new Japanese knife in good condition. Instead of sharpening, this steel keeps your knife sharp by making sure the edge is aligned with the rest of the blade instead of slightly bent in one direction from contact with the cutting surface. Give your knife a few swipes on this steel each time before you use it, and your knife will stay in better condition between sharpenings. Since it is smooth, it will not mar the surface of the blade if you accidentally slip while steeling. I looked around Amazon, and found a few other smooth steels, but they were four or five times the price!
