It is designed to use horizontally rather than vertically, it cuts open the can but doesn't touch the food inside. It has built in little pliers to remove the lid and it can be replaced if you are going to store it in the refrigerator half used. I am such a fan of Rosle products- smartly engineered and of great quality. Don't be dismayed about the price because you will not likely need another can opener in your lifetime.
